dtp_graphics.jpgAdded Intelligence

The more traditional face of technical illustration involves creating black and white line artwork for parts catalogues, operators’ manuals and maintenance guides. This requirement has usually been for printed manuals, though more and more, we are creating images which will be used in Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETM’s). The use of electronic illustration and layout applications now means that we can be certain of providing the right type of image for the right publication format.

Our illustrations can now contain hotspots ready for import into an IETM. This added intelligence delivers more information and provides a more user friendly format than any printed document ever could. The old idea of a manual being driven from a master contents list might soon be a thing of the past. Using intelligent graphics we can create a manual which is driven from a graphical user interface, using mouse roll-overs to identify major assemblies, clicking to reveal the sub-assemblies, clicking again to show an exploded parts list and from there identifying a particular component. Mouse over will then show a part number and a quantity per assembly, click it to add it to a shopping basket, and all without turning a page.

There will always be a requirement for the printed and bound document, however, many engineering companies have invested heavily in the use of Computer Aided Design Systems, and it would be foolish not to take advantage of this existing data for a technical publication. Our illustration systems allow us to import this data, manipulate it if required, and then prepare it for inclusion in the final document, with the added bonus of saving you money!
